We are created by God as his treasured children in a loving family.
Having been born sinful, God adopts us as his children not because we are good, but because he loves us (Romans 8:15-17, Galatians 4:3-7, Ephesians 1:5-14,I John 4:10). Our identity as children does not end when we rebel and sin because we did not become his children based upon our works or decisions (John 1:12-13). Our life is defined not by our actions, but by his action on our behalf in his life, death, and resurrection (Romans 6:1-11). Not only this, but we are adopted as a valued, vital member into a family of his children who love and care for us even in our brokenness and sin (I Corinthians 12:14-26,Ephesians 4:10-16). He and our new family love us even in our rebellion. Through his love, we are drawn back into his image and family, and celebrated us as treasured children and siblings (Isaiah 56:5, 62:3-12, Luke 15:11-24,Zephaniah 3:17, Hebrews 12:7-11). It is therefore his grace, not following rules, that causes us to look like what we already are in him.
